I wrote this song while working on a habitat restoration project for the National Parks in Pacifica, California. My friend/colleague was trying to locate and capture an invasive turtle that had recently popped up in the park; most likely somebody's pet turtle that they decided to let go.

It was proving to be a rather difficult task so I suggested that the best way to find the turtle was to lure it by singing to it. The first verse, "Tortuga tortuga venga aquì. Tortuga tortuga venga a mì.", was the first thing to pop into my head.

When I came home from work later that day and told Kaci the story, she thought it was cute and suggested the second verse, "¿Tortuga tortuga adonde fuiste? Tortuga tortuga estoy muy triste".

And so Tortuga was born.
